Composting at its finest!
Y’all!! This weekend we spent some quality time getting our very own Seal Dove Hacienda compost up and running!
Fortunately for us, there was an abundance of scrap wood 2x4’s hanging out around our shed area and some miscellaneous scrap metal bunched up in the corners of our property. What better way to put these materials to work than the construction of a mean and mighty compost?!
After the great gathering of scrap materials, we realized we would be able to develop quite the compost and got to work stacking the 2x4’s in a nearly perfect square and weaving the random metal through the pieces of wood to develop it’s backbone.
The end result?! Nearly 75 square feet of juicy composting space about 150 ft from the back of our home for easy access. We got it started by turning up the native dirt, feeding it piles of dried up oak leaves that had fallen through our first winter, scrap bark that we compiled and most famously, garbage bags of raw food scrap that we had been setting aside!
We weren’t it alone — thank goodness! We got a leetle help from Pappa Bear Wade and Alisha who were visiting and also our gremlin kitty cat - Zeusy Jr.
We cannot wait to have mountain high material to nourish our permaculture mounds!
