We got down and dirty with three bales of alfalfa hay today and lots and lots of winter cover crop 👨🏻🌾🚜👩🏻🌾
Six hands strong (thanks to Pappa Wade visiting for the holidays 🥧🦃🌲🎅🤶🦌⛄), we accomplished sowing winter cover crop on our big mamma mound! #MOUNDLIFE
We were stoked to find some organic alfalfa hay from our local feed store Simply Country and loaded up early this morning and got to work by mid morning on our 180' hügelkultur mound.
A little late in the season but thanks to California's temperate year round weather, we took to sowing winter cover crop from High Mowing Organic Seeds.
In an effort to deter our friendly family birds 🐦 that frolic around our farm, we first applied a light layer of the organic alfalfa hay over the surface of both sides of our hügelkultur mound. We then mixed up some winter rye, field peas, oats, hairy vetch, crimson clover, red clover and generously sowed allll 180' on both sides and on it's spine.
Next, we grabbed handfuls of our might machine Redworm soil mixture that we scored from our local store, The Worm Factory and gracefully scattered four pounds of these babes across the spine of the mound, with focus on having them make a home around our planted berry trees and bushes.
Last but not least, we all went in on adding a thick top layer of the organic alfalfa hay. This took us to sundown 🌄 with just enough tolerable weather to saturate the mound with some water so it can all take root 🌱
