Gold Country
An Outdoor Enthusiast’s Wonderland!
Hiking, paddle boarding, snowboarding OH MY!
When we made the decision to pull the trigger and plant roots in California, we knew three things definitively -- we wanted at least a few acres first and foremost, we wanted to be completely immersed in nature so we could enjoy some of our favorite things, and we wanted and needed to be within 45 minutes of an International Airport so we could continue enjoying the world without restriction . With these must haves in mind, we moved our focus to California's Gold Country. It was also an easy sale since we already had quite a few friends living and loving life in the Nevada City / Grass Valley area.
Our beautiful hacienda, located in our delightful, leetle, unincorporated town of Oregon House belongs to Yuba County, one of eleven counties that make up California's Gold Country. Coined California's Gold Country, this part of California runs from Sacramento Valley up to the western slope of the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range and is home to SO much of California's beauty! Only 45 minutes to the Sacramento International Airport , we enjoy being able to hop on a plane and get anywhere quickly, an hour to the state capital and only a couple of hours to Lake Tahoe or Lodi's severely underrated wine country , we truly feel like we lucked out in our somewhat hasty decision to push forward with our dream!
While we knew and loved the fact that we would only be 15 minutes from California's notable Yuba River, we had no idea how much history our new home was sitting on and the uncapped opportunities for exploration.
This past weekend, we took a skip and a hop over to South Yuba River Park to explore the reopened Bridgeport Covered Bridge!! Over 220 ft long, the bridge is the only remaining single-span "Howe Truss-Burr Arch covered timber bridge" of its size in the country. It was originally constructed with only hand tools and horses in 1862! It was closed to tourists in 2011 due to safety concerns and nearly a decade later it reopened to visitors including us!!
We can't decide if the mind blowing history and craftsmanship of this bridge is the best part or the glistening sun that cascades and sparkles on the emerald green Yuba River that runs under the Bridge is the best part?? We'll let you decide!
Until our next adventure, we hope you enjoy!!
